An Inspiring Choral Spiritual

What is Stacey V. Gibbs, “The Hymn!” About?
Why Should You Care?

From generation to generation, music has been used to express the feelings of others from a wide range of cultures. It is rare that you encounter a piece of music that not only channels the inner feelings of one’s culture, but also connects them to another. Stacy V. Gibbs, “The Hymn,” achieves this by combining three of America’s well known traditional songs, in order to craft an arrangement that breaks the barrier definition of what a hymn can be.

Stacy V. Gibbs, “The Hymn,” combines “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” to demonstrate a nuanced take on the word, patriotism. Patriotism by definition, translates to, “devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country.”

Although each of the hymns express these qualities, each defines the phrase expressed above differently. Because Gibbs has utilized songs derived from distinct origins with various meanings, he is able to combine the way each song expresses the term unity.
